Equivalency Calculations

In Michigan, products are broken down into 2 categories that each contribute differently to purchase limit calculations:

1. Usable Marijuana
2. Marijuana-Infused Products 

NOTE: All purchase limit equivalency calculations are based on 1 ounce = 28 grams.

Usable Marijuana

‘Usable Marijuana’ products are made up of only cannabis and/or extracted cannabinoids including flower, shake, kief, and concentrates like oils, waxes, shatter, etc. Prerolls and vapes are also considered usable marijuana products, even though they include non-cannabis elements (paper, tip, cartridge hardware) that allow for consumption. 

Usable marijuana products contribute to purchase limits by simply taking the weight of the product and subtracting it from the total daily (and, if applicable, monthly) purchase limit.

Marijuana-Infused Products

'Marijuana-Infused Products', as the name suggests, are items with cannabis or cannabinoids added to other ingredients to form a product. Infused products include topicals, tinctures, edibles, drinks, etc.

The Michigan Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA) has defined an equivalency conversion for infused products based on the net weight or volume of the product.  

• Solid products: 16 ounces = 1 ounce of usable marijuana
• Liquid products: 36 fluid ounces = 1 ounce of usable marijuana

Adult Use

Adult-use customers over the age of 21 may purchase up to 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana or its equivalent in marijuana-infused products per transaction. Of the 2.5-ounce total purchase limit, only 15 grams can be in concentrate form. 

Examples

Jack’s cart has 1/2 ounce of flower, an 8-ounce infused brownie, and 14 grams of wax. Here’s how his purchase limits are calculated:

• Half ounce of flower = 0.5 ounces (14 grams) of usable marijuana
• 8-ounce brownie = 0.5 ounces of usable marijuana equivalent
  Tip: 16 ounces of solid infused products are equal to 1 ounce of usable marijuana.
• 14 grams of wax = 0.5 ounces (14 grams) of usable marijuana in concentrate form
  • Total: 1.5 ounces of usable marijuana (1 ounce remaining)
    He can still purchase up to 1 gram of concentrate and 27 grams of non-concentrated usable marijuana or its equivalent in infused products. Alternatively, he can add up to 1 ounce of non-concentrated usable marijuana or its equivalent in infused products. 

Jill’s cart has 30 0.5-gram vape cartridges, 13 1-gram prerolls, 12 3-ounce tinctures. Here’s how her purchase limits are calculated:

• 30 0.5-gram vape cartridges = 15 grams of usable marijuana in concentrate form
• 13 1-gram prerolls = 13 grams of usable marijuana
• 12 3-ounce tinctures = 1 ounce of usable marijuana equivalent
  

TIP: 36 fluid ounces of liquid infused products are equal to 1 ounce of usable marijuana. 

• • • Total: 2 ounces of usable marijuana (0.5 ounces remaining)
      She can still purchase 14 grams of non-concentrated usable marijuana or its equivalent in infused products. She is not allowed to purchase any more concentrate because she’s already hit the concentrate limit of 15 grams.

Medical

Medical patients who are enrolled in the state registry program can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana or its equivalent in marijuana-infused products per day. Medical patients are also subject to a limit of 10 ounces per month. 

Examples

Mary’s cart has 14 1-gram disposable vapes, 7 grams of shatter, 7 grams of oil, and a 16-ounce package of gummies. She hasn’t made any other purchases this month. Here’s how her purchase limits are calculated:

• 14 1-gram disposable vapes = 0.5 ounces (14 grams) of usable marijuana 
• 7 grams of shatter = 0.25 ounces (7 grams) of usable marijuana
• 7 grams of oil = 0.25 ounces (7 grams) of usable marijuana
• 16-ounce package of gummies = 1 ounce of usable marijuana equivalent

TIP: 36 fluid ounces of liquid infused products are equal to 1 ounce of usable marijuana. 

• • • Total: 2 ounces of usable marijuana (0.5 ounces remaining today, 8 ounces remaining this month)
      Mary can purchase up to 0.5 more ounces of usable marijuana or its equivalent in infused products today. Her remaining usable marijuana allotment can be used on concentrated or non-concentrated products because she is a medical patient. 

Jane’s cart has a quarter ounce of flower, 1 4-ounce infused cookie, a 9-ounce infused lotion, and a 9-ounce infused soda. She has made other purchases this month that total 8 ounces. Here’s how her purchase limits are calculated:

• Quarter ounce of flower = 0.25 ounces (7 grams) of usable marijuana
• 4-ounce infused cookie = 0.25 ounces of usable marijuana equivalent
  Tip: 16 ounces of solid infused products are equal to 1 ounce of usable marijuana.
  
• 18-ounce lotion = 0.5 ounces of usable marijuana equivalent

TIP: 36 fluid ounces of liquid infused products are equal to 1 ounce of usable marijuana. 

• • • Total: 1 ounce of usable marijuana (1 ounce remaining today, 1 ounce remaining this month)
      Jane can purchase 1 more ounce of usable marijuana or its equivalent in infused products. She’s allowed any number of additional transactions today or later this month, but because her monthly limit is already at 9 ounces, the remaining purchases can collectively add up to only 1 ounce. Even though the daily limit is usually 2.5 ounces, the monthly limit of 10 ounces lowers her daily limit to whatever her remaining amount for the month is.
