Keeping your sitemap up to date in Google Search Console ensures that your site’s pages are properly indexed by Google. This helps with SEO and makes your content more discoverable in search results.

Follow the steps below to submit or update your sitemap in Google Search Console based on your website configuration.

Step 1: Log in to Google Search Console

  1. Go to Google Search Console.

  2. Log in with the Google account associated with your website.

  3. Select your property (i.e., the correct website) from the left-hand sidebar.

Step 2: Locate Your Sitemap URL

Your sitemap URL depends on how your website is configured. Choose the one that matches your setup:

  • Full Website Cutover:
    https://xyz.com/sitemap.xml

  • Reverse Proxy Setup:
    https://xyz.com/menu-path/sitemap.xml

  • Subdomain Setup:
    https://shop.xyz.com/sitemap.xml

Replace xyz.com with your actual domain.

Step 3: Submit or Update Your Sitemap

  1. In Google Search Console, go to the Sitemaps tab in the left-hand navigation menu.

  2. Under Add a new sitemap, enter the path from your sitemap URL and click Submit.

  3. If you are updating an existing sitemap, remove the old one first by clicking the three-dot menu next to it, then re-submit the updated version.

Step 4: Confirm Submission

After submission, you’ll see a status message indicating whether the sitemap was processed successfully. Google will begin to crawl and index the pages listed in your sitemap shortly.

Tips

  • It may take some time for Google to crawl and index new or updated pages.
