Manage Custom Subcategories

Written by Hope Le

Custom subcategories let your organization use more specific product classifications without changing the underlying Treez classifications used for compliance and other product behavior.

A standard subcategory managed by Treez is labeled Global in Catalog. Custom subcategories are created under a global subcategory and provide organization-specific options for assigning and displaying products.

Limited Release: Custom Subcategories is currently available to select organizations and must be enabled before it can be used.

Before You Begin

To manage custom subcategories:

  • Custom subcategories must be enabled for your organization.

  • Your role must include the Catalog Management → Catalog Manage permission.

  • Custom subcategories are managed at the organization level and are available across its stores.

  • Global subcategories cannot be renamed or deleted, but they can be deactivated.

View Your Subcategories

  1. Open Catalog.

  2. Select Manage.

  3. Select Subcategories.

  4. Select a product category.

Global subcategories are identified by the blue Global label. Use the Status filter to view active or deactivated global subcategories.

Active subcategories appear in the product card dropdown. Deactivated subcategories are hidden from new product assignments.

Create a Custom Subcategory

  1. Go to Catalog → Manage → Subcategories.

  2. Find the global subcategory you want to customize.

  3. Select + Add Custom Subcategory.

  4. Enter the custom subcategory name.

  5. Save your changes.

Once a global subcategory has at least one custom subcategory, the global subcategory is treated as deactivated and can no longer be selected for new product assignments. Its custom subcategories replace it in the product card dropdown.

If you want the global name to remain available for assignments, create a custom subcategory with the same name.

Adding a custom subcategory does not reassign products already assigned to the global subcategory. Those products remain assigned to the global until you reassign them.

Deactivate a Global Subcategory

Deactivating a global subcategory hides it from new product assignments. Products already assigned to it are not changed.

A global subcategory is also automatically treated as deactivated when at least one custom subcategory is created under it.

Custom subcategories cannot be deactivated. They can be deleted when no products are assigned to them.

Reassign Products

You can reassign all products in a subcategory at once or edit an individual product.

Reassign All Products in a Subcategory

The bulk reassignment workflow moves every product assigned to the selected subcategory. You cannot select or exclude individual products from the job.

  1. Go to Catalog → Manage → Subcategories.

  2. Find the subcategory containing the products you want to move.

  3. Open its actions menu.

  4. Select the option to reassign its products.

  5. Select the destination subcategory.

  6. Review the confirmation and confirm the reassignment.

The destination dropdown includes:

  • Active global subcategories that do not have custom subcategories.

  • Custom subcategories within the same product category.

When all products are reassigned from a custom subcategory, the empty custom subcategory is automatically deleted.

Products cannot be reassigned to a subcategory in a different product category. Additional restrictions apply when reassigning products to or from bulk and infused subcategories because of compliance requirements.

Reassign an Individual Product

To move only one product:

  1. Open the product in Catalog.

  2. Edit the product.

  3. Select a different subcategory.

  4. Save your changes.

The subcategory dropdown follows the same destination rules as the bulk reassignment workflow.

Track Reassignment Progress

A bulk reassignment may take a few moments, depending on the number of products affected.

Go to Manage → Reassignment Jobs to track its progress. Wait for the job to finish before reviewing the affected products and product collections.

Review Automated Product Collections

Reassigning products may change which products are included in or excluded from automated product collections.

If the subcategory being reassigned is referenced by an automated product collection rule, the confirmation modal displays the number of collections that reference it. The modal does not identify the individual collections.

Depending on their inclusion or exclusion rules, those collections may add or remove products after the reassignment. You will need to audit your automated collections to determine which ones reference the subcategory and whether their rules require an update.

After the reassignment:

  1. Open Collections in Catalog.

  2. Review automated collections that use subcategory rules.

  3. Identify rules that reference the reassigned subcategory.

  4. Confirm that each collection still includes or excludes the intended products.

  5. Update the rules as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Global label mean?

Global identifies a standard subcategory managed by Treez. It provides the underlying product classification used across Treez.

Can I rename or delete a global subcategory?

No. Global subcategories cannot be renamed or deleted. They can be deactivated to hide them from new product assignments.

Are existing products reassigned when I create a custom subcategory?

No. Products already assigned to the global remain assigned to it until you reassign them.

Can I reassign only some products from a subcategory?

The bulk reassignment workflow moves all products in the selected subcategory. To move only one product, edit that product directly in Catalog.

Where will the custom subcategory appear in SellTreez?

Across most SellTreez surfaces that currently display a product’s subtype or subcategory, the custom subcategory appears in place of the global subcategory. If no custom is assigned, the global subcategory appears instead.

Where can I see both the custom and the underlying global subcategory assigned to a product?

The Product List and Inventory Adjustment pages display both values for products assigned to a custom subcategory. This makes it easy to verify the underlying global classification without returning to Catalog.

How do custom subcategories appear in reports?

In-app reporting labels and filters display the custom subcategory as a subtype if one is assigned. CSV exports display the assigned custom subcategory in the Subtype column. If no custom is assigned, that column displays the global subtype. The underlying global subtype is also included in a separate column under Treez Global Subtype.

Do historical and current records display the same subcategory?

Historical sales records reflect the subcategory assigned at the time of the event. Inventory records reflect the product’s current subcategory assignment.

How do custom subcategories appear in Dispensary API responses?

Dispensary Product, Ticket, and Inventory endpoints include subcategory_display_name wherever the response already includes subtype.

subcategory_display_name returns the assigned custom subcategory or falls back to the global subcategory. The existing subtype field continues to return the underlying global subtype. Integrations should use subcategory_display_name to display the resolved subtype name.

Can custom subcategories be managed through the Catalog API?

Yes. Custom subcategories can be managed through the Catalog v3 APIs. See the Custom Subcategories API documentation for available operations and technical details.

Do custom subcategories affect purchase limits, taxes, or compliance?

No. Purchase limits, taxes, compliance, traceability, and other subtype-based SellTreez behavior continue to use the underlying global subtype.
