What is Starting Inventory?

When METRC first comes online, METRC will be an “open” system for a limited time. This means, inventory items won’t be required (or able) to be tracked from seed-to-sale quite yet. Instead, retailers must upload their ‘starting inventory’ via an "External Transfer" which will reflect all of the items they currently have on-hand in their shop.

NOTE: Treez will migrate existing BioTrack inventory in your Treez portal to METRC the night of your migration. Please do not begin entering your current BioTrack inventory into METRC before your migration date as this will create duplicate inventory being migrated by Treez. Learn more about the Illinois METRC Migration plan here!

Once the onboarding or "migration" period has ended, METRC will shift to a “closed-loop” system, which will require products to originate from the properly licensed entity in order to enter the supply chain and move from license to license via a "Licensed Transfer". For example, retailers will no longer be able to create inventory using External Transfers (as is the case with your starting inventory), and instead, inventory coming from a licensed distributor will already have an existing Licensed Transfer manifest in METRC and simply need to be “received”.

What items are considered part of my starting inventory?

Your starting inventory is made up of all cannabis products in your dispensary at the time you start using METRC. If you receive any BioTrack inventory AFTER your migration to METRC has occurred, licensees will need to enter the BioTrack transfer into METRC via an External Transfer. You never need to enter non-cannabis good such as merchandise into METRC.

Any transfers you have received through METRC prior to your migration are not considered starting inventory because they originated from a METRC transfer.

Will Treez Create My Starting Inventory? (Illinois BioTrack > METRC Migration)

Yes! Do not begin creating METRC inventory for your current BioTrack inventory as Treez will migrate this inventory to METRC for you. Learn more about this process here!
