What is a Consumption Lounge?

A consumption lounge (sometimes called a "cannabis lounge," "social use venue," or "hospitality license") is a physical space — either attached to a dispensary or standalone — where adult customers can legally purchase and consume cannabis products on-site. Think of it as a bar-meets-retail model: customers may make multiple purchases throughout a single visit, consume on the premises, and interact with staff in an experience-forward environment.

ℹ️ Different from a Standard Dispensary

Standard retail sells product for off-site consumption. Consumption lounges allow on-site use, which triggers different POS workflows, compliance reporting, and in some states, separate inventory requirements.

State Landscape

Consumption lounge laws vary significantly by state and municipality. Below is a snapshot as of early 2026. Always verify with your state regulator — rules change frequently.

  • Nevada: Most Active
Most mature market. Las Vegas has several operating lounges including NUWU Cannabis Marketplace and The Dispensary. Clark County licenses are live.

  • California: Local Ordinance
Allowed under local ordinance. West Hollywood and San Francisco have active venues. Not state-wide — check your municipality.

  • Colorado: Limited Rollout
"Hospitality licenses" passed in 2019. Slow regulatory rollout; a handful of operators are licensed. Denver requires a separate consumption permit.

  • New Jersey: Emerging
Rules being finalized by the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission. Not yet fully operational as of early 2026.

⚠️ Most states still prohibit on-site consumption

If you're operating or planning to operate a lounge, confirm your state and local licensing requirements before configuring Treez. Operating without the proper license carries significant compliance risk.

POS Workflow for Lounge Operations

The lounge transaction flow differs from standard retail primarily in how purchases are tracked across a single visit. Here's the typical flow:

  1. Customer check-in & ID verification
Verify age and identity at entry. Treez logs the check-in time and links all subsequent transactions to the customer's profile for purchase limit tracking.

  2. Initial purchase at POS
Process the first transaction normally. For lounge-enabled stores, Treez automatically tracks cumulative daily limits across this and all follow-on purchases during the visit.

  3. On-site consumption
Customer consumes on premises. Staff can note which products were consumed if your state requires consumption logging.

  4. Follow-on purchases (tab model)
Customer can return to the counter for additional purchases. Treez tracks running totals against state purchase limits and warns staff if a transaction would exceed them.

  5. Visit close-out & METRC reporting
At end of visit (or shift), all transactions are finalized and reported to METRC as POS sales to your state's tracking system per the retailer license type.

💡 Pro tip: Train staff on cumulative limits

The biggest operational difference is cumulative purchase limit tracking. Unlike a standard retail transaction, Treez checks limits against the customer's entire visit — not just the current cart. Make sure your team understands this before going live.

Configuring Treez for Your Lounge

Inventory Setup

Some states (notably Nevada) require lounge inventory to be tracked separately from your retail floor inventory. In Treez:

  • Create a dedicated Lounge Room in your inventory settings

  • Transfer products from retail rooms to the Lounge Room at the start of each shift

  • Transfers are reported to METRC automatically

⚠️ State-specific rules vary

Nevada limits, California limits, and other state limits may differ from standard retail limits. Review your licensing agreement and contact your CSM to ensure your limits are configured correctly.
