NOTE: Sell by Location is disabled by default. If you’re interested in having this feature enabled for your shop, contact your Customer Success Manager.

Sales Channel Management works together with Location Management to allow you to link sales terminals (a physical register or eCommerce link) to specific inventory locations, so the inventory sold from a terminal is automatically decremented from the linked location. This functionality is essential for supporting the ‘ice cream truck’ delivery model and promotions from a specific sales channel for limited inventory. It can also improve inventory accuracy on the sales floor for shops that have the same product in multiple locations.

Sales Channels

When selling inventory by specific locations, you’ll start by defining your Sales Channels. There are two types of Sales Channels:

  • Terminals are selected at the POS, and limit sellable inventory based on physical locations, like a delivery car or an in-store station.

  • eCommerce channels limit sellable inventory based on the online menu URL it was sold from.

When you associate a location (and the inventory it holds) with a Terminal or eCommerce URL, you allow that inventory to be sold through that Sales Channel. These associations are flexible, so you can set them up in the best way for your specific business:

  • Each location can feed inventory to as many Sales Channels as you like

  • Each Sales Channel can pull from as many locations as you like

NOTE: Because the associated location’s inventory is what ‘feeds’ each Sales Channel, you must set up at least one Terminal and eCommerce URL, and each must have at least one location associated with it, or there will be no inventory shown or available to sell. This is the case even if you only intend on using one type of Sales Channel, i.e. If you’re only planning using Terminals, you must still set-up a catchall eCommerce channel associated with at least one sellable location, and vice versa.

Terminal Sales Channels

When limiting the sellable inventory to a physical location, like an in-store station or vehicle, you’ll set up a Terminal.

Setting up a Terminal Sales Channel

To add a new Terminal Sales Channel, follow the steps below.

Step 1: Navigate to Configuration > Sales Management and click the orange + button in the lower right-hand corner.

Step 2: In the ‘Channel Details’ card:

  • Enter the terminal’s name

  • Select Terminal from the ‘Sales Channel Type’ dropdown

  • Select the ‘Terminal Type’: Fixed or Mobile

TIP: This classification is for reference only — the option you select will not impact how the terminal functions.

Step 3: Turn the ‘Active’ toggle On to enable selling from the terminal.

Step 4: The ‘Hidden’ toggle hides the terminal from the Sell Treez POS selection screen.

  • In-Store or Vehicle: Leave the toggle Off so budtenders are able to select the relevant terminal for their station or car.

  • Kiosk: Turn the toggle On so the kiosk’s terminal is sellable but unable to be selected in Sell Treez.

Step 5: In the ‘Hardware Agent’ card, select the default Hardware Agent station from the dropdown.

TIP: When this terminal is selected, your default will automatically be applied, so you won’t be prompted to select a print station on the Sell Treez POS selection screen.

Step 6: In the ‘Locations’ card, select which locations this terminal will pull inventory from for sales. You must select at least one location, or there will be no inventory shown when the terminal is selected, but you can select as many locations as you’d like.

TIP: Only sellable locations are able to be selected. If a parent location is not sellable, child locations will also be unselectable.

Selling from a Terminal Sales Channel

Step 1: Navigate to Retail > Sell Treez POS.

Step 2: On the Sell Treez POS Selection screen,

  • Select your cash drawer.

TIP: Sales Channels have no impact on cash drawers or Cash Handling.

  • Select your Terminal, which will automatically select the default print station attached to the Sales Channel.

TIP: Terminals are tied to shifts, so if you select the incorrect Terminal or need to change Terminals, you’ll need to end your shift and start a new one.

Step 3: Confirm your starting balance, select a customer from the queue, and continue starting your shift as usual.

In Sell Treez, only inventory from the selected terminal’s associated locations will be visible in the left-hand side menu and be able to be added to the ticket.

NOTE: If you scan an item from a location that is not associated with your selected terminal, an error message will display and you will not be able to add the item to the ticket. If you’d like to sell that item from your Terminal, the item will need to be moved into a location associated with the terminal in Inventory Control.

eCommerce Sales Channels

eCommerce Sales Channels allow you to set up a pre-filtered online menu that only displays inventory from selected locations. You can use this to create menus for a specific brand or product selection.

NOTE: Because the associated location’s inventory is what ‘feeds’ the Sales Channel, you must set up at least one eCommerce channel and leave it enabled, or there will be no inventory shown on your online menu. This is the case even if you only intend on using Terminals; you must still set up a catchall eCommerce channel associated with at least one sellable location.

Setting up an eCommerce Sales Channel

Step 1: Navigate to Configuration > Sales Management and click the orange + button in the lower right-hand corner.

Step 2: In the ‘Channel Details’ card:

  • Enter the terminal’s name

  • Select eCommerce from the ‘Sales Channel Type’ dropdown

  • Toggle each Fulfillment type that this Sales Channel offers On.

Step 3: Turn the ‘Active’ toggle On to enable selling from the terminal.

Step 4: In the ‘Locations’ card, select which locations this terminal will pull inventory from for sales. You can select as many locations as you’d like.

TIP: Only sellable locations are able to be selected. If a parent location is not sellable, child locations will also be unselectable.

Step 5: In the ‘URL’ card, enter a name for the channel in the ‘Sales Channel Identifier’ and then click out of the field.

The eCommerce Sales Channel’s URL will populate below. This URL will only display the inventory from locations associated with the Sales Channel.

Selling from an eCommerce Sales Channel

Share or use the eCommerce Sales Channel’s URL to direct shoppers to a menu that shows only inventory from the associated location.

If you’re limiting which products are shown in an eCommerce Sales Channel, it’s very important to let shoppers know that the menu they’re viewing is limited to specific offerings for whatever the Sales Channel’s purpose is.

If you only intend on using Terminals, you’ll still need to set up an eCommerce Sales Channel that links to a location with all the products you’d like to offer on your online menu. Then, you can share that channel’s URL with customers, as usual.

Associating a Location with a Sales Channel from Location Management

Though you can associate Sales Channels with the Locations they can sell from in the Sales Channel Management module, you can also make this link on the Location Management page by following the directions below.

NOTE: The Sales Channels must already be created and Active before starting this process.

Step 1: Navigate to Inventory > Location Management.

Step 2: Identify the location you’d like to associate with a Sales Channel and click the Edit button on the far right-hand side of its row.

Step 3: In the ‘Terminals’ section, select the terminal that you want to pull from the location’s inventory.

Step 4: Click Save.

This location will now feed inventory to the selected terminal.
