NOTE: In California, retailers can only ever transfer product back up the supply chain (to a manufacturer via a distributor) if: An item is defective, AND only in exchange for a non-defective version of the same product or a product of equal value.

Metrc currently doesn't provide an API for outgoing transfers, so when you return products to vendors, you'll always need to create the outgoing manifest for this in Metrc manually. There are 3 distinct scenarios for processing returns to vendors in Metrc and Treez. Click the links below for instructions for each.

Step 1: Navigate to Inventory > Inventory Management > Inventory Control.

Step 2: Identify the package you'd like to return and check the box on the far left-hand side of the appropriate package's row.

Step 3: On the action bar on the bottom of the screen, select Return to Vendor.

Step 4: If the distributor transporting the package back to the vendor has a temporary license, continue here.
If the distributor transporting the package back to the vendor has an annual license, continue here.

If you realize a package has a defective product after already having made some sales on the package, follow the steps below to return the remaining inventory to the vendor.

Step 1: Navigate to Inventory > Inventory Management > Inventory Control.

Step 2: Identify the package you'd like to return and checking the box on the far left-hand side of the appropriate package's row.

Step 3: On the action bar on the bottom of the screen, select Return.

Step 4: Then, navigate over to Metrc where you'll split the original package so the units you're returning are in a new package. You can find instructions on how to split a package, here.

NOTE: NEVER transfer a package that's had sales made from it. ALWAYS split packages before transferring inventory, even if you're transferring the entire remaining quantity of a package. Transferring a package with previous sales causes 2 main issues:

Step 5: Determine whether or not the distributor transporting the package back to the vendor is Metrc-enabled or not.

Returns to vendors for inventory that was previously purchased by a customer and then returned at the POS can be completed by following the steps outlined here.
