Overview
A custom tender type is a payment option you create for your store. Once it's set up and enabled, budtenders can select it at checkout like any other payment type. Sales paid with it show up under its own name in your payment reports, shift reports, and daily totals.
You can have up to 3 active custom tender types at a time.
Before you begin: Custom tender types need to be turned on for your store by Treez Support. Contact [email protected] to enable the feature. If you also want to use custom tender types for refunds or POS Ticket Adjustments, mention that in the same request.
Prerequisites
Custom tender types must be turned on for your store. Contact Treez Support to enable the feature.
You need access to the Config Page in Treez.
Contact Treez Support if you want a custom tender type to be available for refunds or POS Ticket Adjustments. See Refunds and POS Ticket Adjustments below.
Creating a Custom Tender Type
1. Navigate to Configurations → Config Page → Point of Sale
2. Expand the Payment Types section
3. Click + Add payment type at the bottom of the list. The counter next to the button shows how many custom tender types you've created
4. In the Create Payment Type window, enter a Provider Name. This is the name budtenders see at checkout and the name that appears in your reports (25 characters max)
5. Review the Currency Type. It fills in automatically from the Provider Name, in capital letters with underscores (for example, "Gift Card" becomes GIFT_CARD). _CUSTOM is added to the end automatically.
6. Click Save
Your new custom tender type is added to the Payment Types list, turned off. Follow the steps below to turn it on.
The Currency Type is the permanent system name for your custom tender type. Treez uses it to identify the tender behind the scenes, including when API partners send payments to Treez.
It can only contain capital letters and underscores. Numbers, spaces, and special characters aren't allowed
It can't be changed after you save, so double-check it before clicking Save
Your customers and budtenders never see it. They only see the Provider Name
Enabling a Custom Tender Type
In the Payment Types section, find your custom tender type
Turn on the Enabled toggle
(Optional) Select a Default Routing Account if you want sales paid with this tender to be tracked in a cash handling account
Click Save at the bottom of the Payment Types list
The custom tender type is now available at checkout.
Payment Types Settings
Each row in the Payment Types list has these settings:
Payment Type: The Provider Name. For custom tender types, you can edit it right in this field
Enabled: Turns the tender type on or off at checkout
Require Manager Pin for Returns?: Requires a manager PIN before a refund can be issued to this tender type. This setting only matters once Treez Support has enabled refunds for the tender
Default Routing Account: The cash handling account that sales of this tender type route to. If you don't select an account, amounts paid with this tender show in the Shift Report but aren't deposited to any cash handling account
Trash icon: Deletes the custom tender type (custom tender types only)
Taking a Payment at Checkout
Enabled custom tender types appear on the SellTreez payment screen under the Custom heading. Each one shows as a Charge [Provider Name] button (for example, Charge Gift Card).
Ring up the order as usual and go to payment
Under Custom, click Charge
[Provider Name]Enter the amount being paid with the custom tender → Click Charge
If needed, collect any remaining balance with another payment type
Editing a Custom Tender Type
You can rename a custom tender type at any time.
1. In the Payment Types section, click the custom tender type's name in the Payment Type column
2. Enter the new Provider Name
3. Click Save
The new name shows at checkout and in reports from then on. The Currency Type stays the same, so all of the tender's past transactions stay linked to it.
Deleting a Custom Tender Type
1. In the Payment Types section, click the trash icon on the custom tender type's row
2. Click Save
Deleting a custom tender type removes it from checkout and frees up one of your 3 slots. If you later create a tender with the same Provider Name or Currency Type as a deleted one, Treez asks whether you want to Reactivate it. Reactivating restores the original tender type instead of creating a new one.
Refunds and POS Ticket Adjustments
New custom tender types are created with refunds and POS Ticket Adjustments turned off, and you can't change this from the Config Page. To use a custom tender type for either one, contact Treez Support.
Refunds: Until Treez Support enables refunds, the custom tender type doesn't appear as a refund option in SellTreez
POS Ticket Adjustments: Until Treez Support enables adjustments, the custom tender's amount on a ticket can't be edited in our Cash → POS Ticket Adjustment module
Reporting
Custom tender types appear in your reports alongside your other payment types.
Payment Summary (SellTreez → Reports → Sales → Payment): Shows the total collected with each custom tender type for the selected time period
Payment Log (SellTreez → Reports → Sales → Payment): Shows each individual payment, with custom tender payments labeled by their Provider Name
Cash Handling
Custom tender types are also included in the Cash module:
Shift Report (Cash → Cash Handling → Shift Report): Each custom tender type shows under a shift's dropdown
Daily Totals (Cash → Cash Handling → Daily Totals): Includes a row for each custom tender type
Close Shift (Cash → Close Shift): Includes a field to enter the counted total for each custom tender type
Things to Know
You can have up to 3 active custom tender types. Deleted tender types don't count toward the limit
New custom tender types start out turned off. Turn on Enabled and click Save before using them at checkout
The Provider Name can be changed at any time. The Currency Type can't be changed after saving
Custom tender types can't be hidden from the POS while they're enabled. To remove one from checkout, turn off Enabled or delete it
Refunds and POS Ticket Adjustments to a custom tender type require help from Treez Support
Custom tender types only record the payment in Treez. They don't process or charge anything, so collect the payment through your own gift card, store credit, or other system
If you work with an API partner that needs to send payments using a custom tender type, contact Treez Support to set this up
