Establishing locations lets you track where various items are stored within your shop. There’s no one size fits all when it comes to location management — you can be as broad or granular as you’d like when it comes to organizing your inventory. In some states, there may be certain regulatory requirements for storing your inventory. That’s why it’s important to understand your state laws before solidifying a location management system.

Navigating Location Management
Locations are listed in alphabetical order — first by parent location, then by sub (child) locations within each parent.
You can use the search bar or inventory type dropdown to limit visible options, or use the Active/Inactive dropdown to switch between current and previously used locations.
NOTE: For compliance reasons, a location can never be deleted, it can only be made Inactive.
If a location is set as ‘Sellable’ then any inventory moved into that location will be available for sale at the POS. Locations that are non-sellable act as storage or backstock areas.
On the Inventory Control page, sellable locations will appear with a dollar sign icon next to them.
Default Receiving Location
The Default Receiving Location the location that all incoming inventory will initially be placed in. Set the Default Receiving Location by checking the ‘Default Receiving Location’ box within the row of a location.
You can choose:
- separate default locations, one for Medical inventory and another for Adult-use inventory, or
- a mixed default location for both Medical and Adult-use inventory.
We recommend designating an area of your shop as a 'receiving room'.
Once received, you’ll then be able to use the Inventory Control page to move any items you’d like to store in alternate locations.
By default, your location management page will have a single top-level location named ‘Dispensary’ with 2 parent locations ‘Front of House’ and ‘POS Returns’.
- Under ‘Dispensary’ you can create as many additional parent and sub-locations as you see fit.
- The ‘Front of House’ location is your first default parent location. If needed, you can rename this location or create a sub-location under it.
- ‘POS Returns’ is the location where inventory returned at the POS is automatically moved to. This represents a single designated area in your shop where returned/defective inventory is stored before you can destroy, return it to the vendor or add it back to your live inventory. You can’t create any sub-locations for your ‘POS Returns’ location.
TIP: In Metrc-enabled states, the only action you can take on returned cannabis products is to destroy the inventory. This is done for compliance reasons.
Creating a New Location
Locations are structured in a tiered format. Meaning, you’ll always need to create the most general location before you’re able to create more specific areas within it. For example, you may choose to organize your inventory as detailed as Dispensary > Back Room > Row 2 > Shelf B > Section 4, or you may choose to simply store all inventory in your Dispensary. Regardless of which method you choose, you'll always need to begin by creating the parent location first.
Once your locations have been created, you can use the Inventory Control page to move specific quantities of inventory into and out of each location, as needed.
Step 1: To begin creating inventory locations navigate to Inventory > Location Management.
Step 2: Click the + button next to a location to create a new parent or sub-location within your Dispensary. The locations you create should relate to real areas within your shop. e.g., Receiving Room, Back Room, Storefront, etc.
Step 3: Fill out all fields and click Save.
- Name: This is the name that will be associated with the actual location. It’s best to make it short and descriptive.
TIP: If your internal location management system is very detailed, we recommend physically labeling your rooms, rows, shelves, etc. for easy reference.
- Inventory Type: From the dropdown, select the type of inventory that will be stored there — adult-use, medical, or both.
TIP: If you set a top-level location as a singular inventory type (eg. medical), then all of its sub-locations must also match that inventory type. Likewise, if your shop only serves medical customers, then all locations will automatically have their inventory type set to medical.
- Parent Location: this is the dispensary location or a parent location that the new location will fall under. You can edit this once the location has been created.
Step 4: Once you’ve created 1+ parent location(s), you can nest as many sub-locations under it as you’d like by clicking the + on the associated line. There’s no limit to the number of locations you can create.
Editing a Location
Clicking on the edit icon within a row will allow you to update the name, inventory type, parent location, status (active/inactive), and sellability of each location.
Updating Inventory Types
If you update the inventory type of a parent location from:
- ‘All Types’ to ‘Medical’ OR ‘Adult’ all sub-locations under it will automatically be updated to match the updated inventory type of the parent location.
- ‘Medical’ OR ‘Adult’ > ‘All Types’ all sub-locations under it will remain unaffected. This is because it’s possible to have certain areas within a larger room designated for specific types of inventory, while the parent location is capable of housing both types of inventory.
Activating/Deactivating a Location
For compliance reasons, locations can never be permanently deleted, they can only be made inactive. Click on the edit icon within a row to toggle the ‘Active Location’ on or off to make the location active or inactive.
- If a top-level location is made inactive/active, all sub-locations will also be made inactive/active automatically.
- A location cannot be made inactive if there’s any inventory currently contained in it. Before being able to deactivate a location, you’ll need to move the inventory to an alternate location via the Inventory Control page.
Sellable or Unsellable Location
Click on the edit icon within a row and then use the ‘Sellable Location’ toggle to make the inventory in this location unsellable. This means the inventory is being stored as backstock and will not appear in the POS.
Using Location Management for Delivery
If your shop offers delivery, you can create unique locations for each of your cars, making it easy to keep track of your mobile inventory.
TIP: Make sure you understand your local delivery regulations before establishing a mobile inventory management process.
Creating a Mobile Inventory
Step 1: Create a new mobile parent location by tapping the + icon next to ‘Dispensary’ and filling out the required fields.
- If your shop serves both medical and adult-use customers, we recommend setting the mobile parent location to ‘All Types’.
Step 2: Click the + icon next to your newly created mobile parent location and create a unique sub-location for each car you use for delivery. (eg., 'Blue Dodge', 'Eric’s Car', etc.)
- If you use specific cars for serving different types of customers (adult-use vs. medical) you can designate which inventory type the car is used for.
Once your locations have been created, you can use the Inventory Control page to move specific quantities of inventory into and out of each car, as needed.
