Manage Categories in Catalog

Use Manage Categories to customize category display names and control which categories are available when creating products.

Each Treez category supports one custom display name, giving your organization flexibility to use its preferred terminology without changing the underlying product classification for compliance and other product requirements.

Coming Soon: Manage Categories and Subcategories will initially be available as a limited release for select organizations and must be enabled before it can be used.

Before You Begin

  • Manage Categories must be enabled for your organization.

  • Your role must include the Catalog Management → Catalog Manage permission.

  • Each Treez category supports one custom display name. Custom display names do not create additional categories.

  • Products cannot be reassigned from one Treez category to another.

  • Categories can be deactivated even if products are assigned to them. Existing products retain their category assignment.

  • A 5-minute waiting period applies between display name updates so the system has time to update all affected products.

View Your Categories

  1. Open Catalog.

  2. Select Manage.

  3. Select Categories.

Active categories are available when creating products. Deactivated categories cannot be assigned to new products.

Set a Custom Category Display Name

  1. Go to Catalog → Manage → Categories.

  2. Find the Treez category you want to customize.

  3. Enter the custom name in the Display Name field.

  4. Save your changes.

  5. Review the confirmation showing the previous name, new name, and number of affected products.

  6. Select Save to confirm.

For example, you can change the display name for Cartridge to Vapes. All products in that category use the new display name.

Changes may take a moment to appear across all surfaces. You must wait 5 minutes before updating the same category display name again.

Reset a Category Display Name

You can reset a custom display name to the default Treez category name.

  1. Go to Catalog → Manage → Categories.

  2. Find the category you want to reset.

  3. Select the option to reset its display name.

  4. Confirm the change.

Resetting the display name does not change product assignments or the category’s active status. The same 5-minute waiting period applies between same category updates.

Deactivate a Category

Deactivate categories you do not want available when creating products.

  1. Go to Catalog → Manage → Categories.

  2. Find the category you want to deactivate.

  3. Select the option to deactivate it.

  4. Confirm the change.

Deactivation prevents the category from being assigned to new products. Existing products remain unchanged and retain their category assignment. You do not need to reassign products before deactivating a category.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Treez category?

The Treez category is the standard product classification managed by Treez. A custom display name changes how that category is labeled without changing its underlying classification for compliance and other product requirements.

Can I rename or delete a Treez category?

You can set a custom display name and reset it to the default Treez name. You cannot delete a category, but you can deactivate it to hide it from new product assignments.

Can I create multiple custom categories under a Treez category?

No. Each Treez category supports one custom display name. To create custom subcategories, see Manage Subcategories in Catalog.

Are existing products reassigned when I set a custom display name?

No. Existing products retain their underlying Treez category assignment. The custom name changes the display label.

Can I reassign products to another category?

No. Products cannot be moved from one Treez category to another.

What happens to existing products when I deactivate a category?

Existing products remain unchanged and retain their category assignment. The deactivated category is no longer available when assigning a category to new products.

How does deactivating a category affect product collections?

In manual collections, you can still filter by a deactivated category if it has products assigned. In automated collections, deactivated categories cannot be selected in the category filter when creating or editing a collection. Existing collections using that category continue to include the expected products.

Do I need to reassign products before deactivating a category?

No. Unlike subcategories, a category can be deactivated while products are still assigned to it.

Why can’t I update the category display name again right away?

A 5-minute waiting period applies between updates so the system can finish updating all affected products. Once that period ends, you can change or reset the display name again.

Where will the custom category display name appear in SellTreez?

Across most SellTreez surfaces that currently display a product’s type or category, the custom display name appears in place of the default Treez category name. If no custom name is set, the default name appears.

How do custom category display names appear in reports?

In-app reporting labels and filters display the custom category display name if one is set. CSV exports display it in the Type column. If no custom name is set, that column displays the default Treez category name. The default Treez category is also included in a separate Treez Product Type column.

Do historical and current records display the same category name?

Historical sales records reflect the category name at the time of the event. Inventory records reflect the product’s current category display name.

How do custom category display names appear in Dispensary API responses?

Dispensary Product, Ticket, and Inventory endpoints include category_display_name wherever the response already includes type. category_display_name returns the custom display name or falls back to the default Treez category name. The existing type field continues to return the default name. Integrations should use category_display_name to display the preferred category name.

Can custom category display names be managed through the Catalog API?

Yes. Custom category display names can be managed through the Catalog v3 APIs. API documentation is coming soon.

Do custom category display names affect purchase limits, taxes, or compliance?

No. Custom display names do not change the underlying Treez category or subcategory used for purchase limits, taxes, compliance, and other product behavior.
